Plantation Innovation Zone

What is an Innovation Zone?

In 1995, the Broward County School Board adopted Policy 1402, establishing district-wide innovation zones, or learning communities. The purpose of these innovation zones was to provide better educational opportunities for students by organizing the Broward County school district into zones.

The zones operate as clusters of elementary, middle, and high schools. The clusters provide a community-centered approach to organizing student feeder patterns from elementary school to middle and high school.

Individual schools benefit from being part of a team effort involved in coordination, collaboration, and shared decision making with other schools in their zone.

Our Innovation Zone

The Plantation Innovation Zone is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school:

Staying in the Zone

When Elementary students graduate from 5th grade, they can look forward to a wealth of academic, athletic, and extracurricular activities at Plantation Middle and Plantation High.

International Baccalaureate - Plantation Middle is an IB World School candidate. Plantation High School is a fully authorized International Baccalaureate World School. Only students who live within Plantation High School’s boundaries may apply to the IB program at either school. Acceptance into the IB program is based upon FCAT scores and GPA.

Aerospace Engineering Program - Plantation High School is home to the only Aerospace Program in Broward County that focuses on the design and testing of rockets enhanced by a NASA grant. Plantation High has won more NASA grants than any other high school in the U.S. To learn more about the role of aerospace technology in the 21st century, visit http://www.spaceflorida.gov/ or read How Florida Will Remain a Launch Pad to Space.

Advanced Academics - Plantation High offers advanced placement (AP) classes. Plantation High students taking advanced placement classes can earn college credit without leaving campus. Plantation Middle students may take advanced classes, including high school honors courses. Plantation Middle also offers the Great Explorations in Math(GEM) program to qualifying students. Acceptance into the GEM program is dependent upon a placement test and FCAT scores.

Athletics - Plantation Middle and Plantation High offer a variety of team and individual sports, including soccer, track, and basketball. Students at Plantation High can also participate in swimming, tennis, volleyball, and football. See the school’s website for the complete sports program.

How Zone Schools Collaborate

Each school’s School Advisory Council (SAC) elects an Innovation Zone representative to represent the school at monthly Innovation Zone meetings.  Innovation Zone representatives must be a parent, and serve a two-year term. Plantation Middle’s current I-Zone representative is Tanya Wallace.

2012 - 2013 Meeting Schedule - Innovation Zone meetings begin at 8:30 am. Meetings are facilitated by the Zone Facilitator. This year’s facilitator is Sherry Rose, principal of Sawgrass Elementary. If you have a topic you would like to see added to the next meeting’s agenda, please contact Ms. Rose at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
